Nick and I went to the library to do research and looked though some of the Indiana Gazette articles. It was harder to find information about the campus since it is a town news paper and not the Penn. We spent about an hour and a half going though them and didn't come up with much becides articles about the town and the local goings on which provided for some funny remarks.

Meeting: November 27,2006
Present: Ashley, Kristen, Nick, Matt, Fridg (our Mascot), Francois, TJ, etc. etc.
Location: The Commonplace Coffeehouse
Time: 10:30-11:30
Convening at the Commonplace Coffeshouse, we discussed our research projects and the information each of us have found in our respective research. Each of the members have found a good amount of information, but we have yet to tie it in all together in power point form. We plan on utilizing the microfilm for pictures and further information on our projects.
The meeting was motioned to adjourn (by fridg), after the stories of thanksgiving break seemed to be more enthralling than that of our project.

Personal Research at the Library 12:30 - 2:30
- Researched the Indiana Gazette's article pertaining to the history of IUP campus buildings - " Named in Their Memory--- Buildings Honor Contributors to Indiana Growth" (“Indiana Gazette” August 8, 1966)
- Searched "Keith Hall" on the librarys website, and viewsd several progressive images of Keith taken in the years 1950 + 1955
- Viewed Susan Drummonds master theses, Indiana State Teachers College : a World War II diary, 1942-1945, but nothing was found pertaining to the construction of keith hall, or the usage of said hall.
- Researched IUP's former presidents, and found that John A Keith was president from 1917-1927 and was IUP's ninth president. Keith, president of the Normal School oversaw the evolution of the institution to collegiate status, from improvement in course content to the hiring of professors with earned doctorates. On January 17, 1927, Keith left the Indiana State Normal School to serve as state superintendent of public instruction.
- Viewed Microfilm pertaining to the years 1933-1945
- Saw several images and short biographies on the film that would further help expand the information I had on Keith Hall.
- Viewed yearbooks searching for pictures and more information which involved John A. Keith, or the general construction and usuage.
November 17, 2006 (kristen)
Hours: 11:45 - 1:45
Research:
*Began looking through images on CONTENTdm and the Special Collections Image Collection
*Trying to find blueprints for Sutton Hall in the 40's. Proving to be slightly difficult.
*Found "A Guidebook to John Sutton Hall" in the IUP Buildings section in Special Collections
- found a lot of information from the late 1800's and early 1900's, not exactly what I was looking for.
*Looked through "John Sutton Hall - A Victorian Restoration" hoping there might be something in there about the 40's.
- John Sutton Hall was included in the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1975
- When State Normal School was established in 1875, John Sutton Hall was the "best-in-the-nation" single building
- No information given on the Thomas Sutton addition
*Found an article posted on the Special Collections Website titled, "Named in Their Memory--- Buildings Honor Contributors to Indiana Growth"
- States, "Thomas Sutton Hall, erected in 1903 as an addition to John Sutton Hall, contains a kitchen, dining rooms, and dieitian’s office on the first floor as well as housing for 65 women students on the second and third floors. " (Still no month for the completion of the building for reference for the microfilm search of Thomas Sutton Hall)
*Taking a look at the Mrs. Drummond's thesis for anything about Sutton Hall in the 40's
- Found that they cleared out the library in the North section of John Sutton Hall in the summer of 1942. The library was moved to Wilson Hall.
- The old library in John Sutton Hall was renovated into a new social room for students
- May 21, 1942 - "The new reception and recreation room at the end of the north wing of John Sutton Hall was formally opened by a reception given by Miss Kimball, Miss Stitt, Dean Whitmyer and Mr. Boyts last Monday." <-- that would make the date...May 18, 1942
- The Art department chose the color scheme for these rooms and donated artwork
- The Home Economics department made drapes and furniture was secured from a WPA project (WPA project was a part of Roosevelt's New Deal and in this case, was an arts project funded by the government)
- April 1, 1943 - each room in John Sutton hall will be equipped with telephones
- October 12, 1943 - the repairs on the porches of John Sutton Hall were completed
- "The Music Department was located over the dining room in Thomas Sutton Hall. The odors from the kitchen would always fill the practice rooms."
*Went up to Special Collections and spoke to a woman about getting the specific month Thomas Sutton Hall was started and completed, as well as an inquiry on blueprints on the entire Sutton Hall during the 40's. She told me, by Monday, I should get a response by email.

Present: Ashley, Kristen, Nick "hick", Dan, Matt (came in 5 minutes late)
Location: The Commonplace Coffeehouse
Time: 10:30-11:30am
The four group members met with Dr. Ricketts, and discussed the usage of microfilm, and what we could expect to find when researching. As usual, Matt came in late, and we then discussed what specific years we should be looking in for the information that we were seeking. We learned how to use the microfilm, load, and get the records we needed from the desk. Unfortunately the student helpers were not very helpful at all.

Personal Research
- Looked at the Indiana Penn 1926-1933 Roll. I tried to find more information on Keiths construction, since the dates were supposedly 1927-1931.
- On this roll, there were several articles on Dr. Keith's involvment with the school such as him giving speeches, dedicating other campus buildings and finally his suprise retirement speech given on January 17, 1927. The article then stated that he offically left the school on January 24, 1927 to become the state superintendent of public instruction.
- Dan and Nick found other information that might be useful to me on the microfilm they were viewing, including pictures and blueprints on the following articles and the following information was asked to be digitized to my P-Drive
- March 8, 1938 - March 25, 1939 - March 8, 1941 - October 1, 1939 - May 21, 1941

Present: Ashley, Kristen, Nick "hick", Dan, Matt and Fridge
Location: The Commonplace Coffeehouse
Time: 10:30-11:30am
Meeting officially started at 10:30 AM. Disscussed topic of live journal for out project, which was brought up by Dan. We all agreed that this would be a great idea, and figured if Dr. Ricketts wanted separate sheets we would copy and paste and print and turn them in separatly. Matt made the motion to adjourn at 11:30 AM and Kristen seconded it.

Present: Ashley, Kristen, Nick "hick", Dan, Matt and Fridge
Location: The Commonplace Coffeehouse
Time: 10:30-11:30am
With all five members present, we discussed the best and most effcient way to post our research notes. Since all agreed that the P-Drive is a little complicated and not the easiest program to use, Dan suggested that we keep a record through a blog. Soon after, Dan made this account with a generic account name and password, and then sent an email to the group members informing us of the information. As you can see, most group members have utilized the website, and those who have noticed how easy it is to post information, and read what the other group members have done. It's an efficient way to keep in communication with our group.

Meeting 2: November 8, 2006
Present: Ashley, Kristen, Nick "hick", Dan, Matt
Location: Library
Time: 10:30-11:30am
Today's meeting with Dr. Ricketts and the group, focused upon learning about the different resources that were available at special collections, and then utilizing the information for our specific topic.
Research Performed:
*Looked through the 1943 yearbook "The Oak"
*Paged through the town heritage book for Indiana, PA (found a picture of Sutton Hall when it was it's largest, with the Thomas Sutton annex)
*Started looking through "Our Homage and Our Love" by Ron Juliette and Dale E. Landon
- I really think this book will end up being my main source for information as it had a whole chapter devoted to Sutton Hall
- page 12 - "The School on the Hill"
--> land owned by J. Sutton was sold to the university for the building
--> architect was James W. Drum and his plan was officially chosen on August 12, 1872
--> groundbreaking in Spring of 1873
- page 22 - "Main building was more than the physcial plant. Principal, faculty, and students blended their lives in joint educational, social, and domestic activities. It was truly home for those who enrolled."

Meeting 3: November 11, 2006
Present: Ashley, Kristen, Dan
Location: The Commonplace Coffeehouse
Time: 10:45-11:30am
The three group members present, discussed thus far what each has found on their respective buildings. All of have found pictures in certain yearbooks, and a modicum of information in captions. Kristen has been able to find a variety of information pertaining to Sutton, especially in the Juliette book, where Sutton is primarily the main focus of the entire book.
We then briefly talked about what books were the most resourceful to use in resarching our buildings, and where we found the most useful information.
The meeting was adjourned after we talked more about our upcoming plan for the following week.
