November 17, 2006 (kristen)

Hours: 11:45 - 1:45

Research:

*Began looking through images on CONTENTdm and the Special Collections Image Collection
*Trying to find blueprints for Sutton Hall in the 40's. Proving to be slightly difficult.
*Found "A Guidebook to John Sutton Hall" in the IUP Buildings section in Special Collections

- found a lot of information from the late 1800's and early 1900's, not exactly what I was looking for.

*Looked through "John Sutton Hall - A Victorian Restoration" hoping there might be something in there about the 40's.

- John Sutton Hall was included in the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1975
- When State Normal School was established in 1875, John Sutton Hall was the "best-in-the-nation" single building
- No information given on the Thomas Sutton addition

*Found an article posted on the Special Collections Website titled, "Named in Their Memory--- Buildings Honor Contributors to Indiana Growth"

- States, "Thomas Sutton Hall, erected in 1903 as an addition to John Sutton Hall, contains a kitchen, dining rooms, and dieitian’s office on the first floor as well as housing for 65 women students on the second and third floors. " (Still no month for the completion of the building for reference for the microfilm search of Thomas Sutton Hall)

*Taking a look at the Mrs. Drummond's thesis for anything about Sutton Hall in the 40's

- Found that they cleared out the library in the North section of John Sutton Hall in the summer of 1942. The library was moved to Wilson Hall.
- The old library in John Sutton Hall was renovated into a new social room for students
- May 21, 1942 - "The new reception and recreation room at the end of the north wing of John Sutton Hall was formally opened by a reception given by Miss Kimball, Miss Stitt, Dean Whitmyer and Mr. Boyts last Monday." <-- that would make the date...May 18, 1942
- The Art department chose the color scheme for these rooms and donated artwork
- The Home Economics department made drapes and furniture was secured from a WPA project (WPA project was a part of Roosevelt's New Deal and in this case, was an arts project funded by the government)
- April 1, 1943 - each room in John Sutton hall will be equipped with telephones
- October 12, 1943 - the repairs on the porches of John Sutton Hall were completed
- "The Music Department was located over the dining room in Thomas Sutton Hall. The odors from the kitchen would always fill the practice rooms."

*Went up to Special Collections and spoke to a woman about getting the specific month Thomas Sutton Hall was started and completed, as well as an inquiry on blueprints on the entire Sutton Hall during the 40's. She told me, by Monday, I should get a response by email.
